The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has put its proposed protest against the 50% telecommunication tariff hike on hold. This decision comes after a meeting between the NLC and a federal government delegation led by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, on Monday.
The meeting aimed to maintain industrial harmony and protect Nigerian interests. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that the meeting’s purpose was to review the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) study, which led to the tariff increase.
After extensive discussions, both parties agreed to establish a 10-man committee, comprising five members from the federal government and five from the NLC. This committee will review the study and submit its report within two weeks.¹
According to Seguin Imohiosen, Director of Information & Public Relations, the committee will meet continuously for two weeks and then provide recommendations to the government and organized labor for final consideration.²
NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero stated that the union will await the committee’s outcome before determining its next course of action.³ The meeting was attended by several high-ranking officials, including ministers and the National Security Adviser.
