In a landmark ruling on April 18, 2025, the Päijät-Häme District Court in Lahti, Finland, approved the extradition of Finnish-Nigerian separatist agitator Simon Ekpa to Nigeria.

His transfer is scheduled for July 15. Ekpa, who refers to himself as the “Prime Minister” of the self-declared Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, faces serious charges including incitement, terrorism, and conspiracy.

Authorities allege his online broadcasts incited violence in southeastern Nigeria, targeting civilians and security forces. Though often linked with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the organization has repeatedly disassociated itself from Ekpa, affirming its commitment to non-violence.

IPOB spokespersons stress that Ekpa acts independently and leads a radical offshoot known as “Autopilot”, believed to be tied to the criminal Biafra Liberation Army (BLA). Ekpa was arrested in Finland in November 2024 after extensive surveillance.

Finnish officials confirmed the extradition decision followed due process, citing evidence presented under the Rome Statute, ratified by both Nigeria and Finland. The Nigerian government has hailed the ruling as a significant step toward accountability and a warning to individuals attempting to destabilize the nation from abroad.Ekpa’s trial is expected to draw international attention.
