Top leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including governors, former governors, and prominent party figures, convened a closed-door meeting in Abuja on Sunday to tackle internal divisions and a wave of defections threatening the party’s stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The high-stakes gathering, hosted by PDP Governors Forum Chairman and Bauchi State Governor Senator Bala Mohammed at the Bauchi Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, aims to restore unity, resolve leadership disputes, and strategize for upcoming elections, including the off-season governorship poll in Anambra.
Key attendees included FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Governors Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), alongside former Senate President Bukola Saraki and ex-governors Liyel Imoke, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and Olagunsoye Oyinlola. However, the absence of Governors Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), and Agbu Kefas (Taraba) underscored the party’s deepening internal rifts.
According to sources, the meeting’s agenda focuses on resolving tensions within the National Working Committee, particularly regarding the roles of Acting National Chairman Ambassador Iliya Damagum and the National Secretary. Discussions also reportedly cover potential coalition talks with other opposition parties and strategies to strengthen internal cohesion.
The outcome of the meeting is expected to shape the PDP’s future trajectory, determining its ability to unify ranks and position itself as a formidable opposition force in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape. Party leaders declined to comment as deliberations continued late Sunday.
