Abia State Governor Alex Otti has vowed to crack down on fake products in Aba markets, picking up where the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) left off. Speaking during his monthly media chat, Otti described the manufacturing of fake products as an embarrassment and encouraged local manufacturers to develop their own brands instead of faking others.
The governor expressed his willingness to support local manufacturers who follow due process, but warned that his administration would come down hard on those producing fake products, which he said are giving the state a bad name. Otti directed his government to continue NAFDAC’s efforts, raiding and stopping manufacturers of fake products in their tracks.
To promote genuine manufacturing, Otti urged individuals to obtain NAFDAC registration and learn from countries like China and Japan. Additionally, he disclosed that N16.6 billion Naira has been allocated in the 2025 budget to upgrade healthcare training institutions and address the shortage of trained medical professionals.
This move is part of the state government’s efforts to partner with NAFDAC in fighting fake drugs and substandard products. NAFDAC has been actively working to rid the country of fake products, including a recent operation in Aba where they uncovered fake wines and other beverages.
